History

March 2007 | Rage City was founded by Heather McGee, Polly Carr, DeeAnn Apgar, and Lori Gage. Each had heard a little about derby through friends or by watching a bout and wanted to establish a league in Alaska. They spent the first season training, recruiting skaters, learning WFTDA rules, and developing the nonprofit structure.

May 2008 | Rage City completed the first exhibition bout in Anchorage, Alaska.

2007-2008 | Rage hosted boot camps for its skaters with guest trainers like Crackerjack and Coach Pauly, sent skaters to RollerCon to develop skills, network with other leagues, and learn more about the world of roller derby.

August 2008 | Rage City begins its first full season of skating.

2008-2009 | Rage developed two strong home teams—the Dirty Polli’s and Sockeye Sallys—hosting three local bouts. They began inter-league competition in the spring of 2009 with a game against Jet City (WA) and the Iron Curtain (AZ). They also grew the local officiating base to improve the league’s grasp of WFTDA rules and become bout-ready for gameplay with sanctioned leagues. During this time, they supported the launch of sister league, Fairbanks Rollergirls.

March 2011 | Rage completed their WFTDA apprenticeship and joined WFTDA as a full member league.

August 2019 | Rage City Rollergirls votes to change their name to Rage City Roller Derby in order to reflect their commitment to guide values—inclusivity, athleticism, and community.

November 2023 | Due to membership growth, Rage City brings back original home teams—Sockeye Sallys and Devil’s Club. Both home teams undergo a rebranding to align with the leagues updated missions and goals.
