About the Trainers

Yeti (Photo courtesy of Jean Schwarzwalder)

Yeti or Not, Here I Come (Gotham Roller Derby & Black Diaspora, #221)

Yeti spent the first 22 years of her athletic career as an alpine ski racer, competing all over the US and Europe. After an ACL tear ended her skiing career at Dartmouth College, one of her co-workers caught her rollerblading (god, yes, rollerblading) and quickly brought her over to the wonderful world of quad skates and roller derby, where she started skating with Twin State Derby.

After a couple of years skating with Santa Cruz's A Team in California as a jammer, Yeti moved to New York City and joined Gotham's All-Stars in 2019 as a blocker and pivot. She is now co-captain of the All-Stars, co-head of the coaching committee and captain of one of Gotham's four home teams, the Brooklyn Bombshells. She is also a member of Black Diaspora Roller Derby, a borderless group that provides an empowering and safe space for Black skaters.

Yeti is a science reporter for The Wall Street Journal, where she covers space, dinosaurs and human evolution. She loves hiking and collecting shells at Nauset Light Beach in Cape Cod, and counsels people never to challenge her to an arm wrestling contest.

DARYL (Twin State Derby & Team Indigenous Rising, #1680)

Daryl spent the first 20 years of her athletic career as an alpine ski racer, with a back injury ending her skiing career at Dartmouth College. She discovered derby while strolling down the Coney Island boardwalk, was awed by a Gotham game, and two weeks later was learning how to skate.

Daryl is a former member of Gotham Roller Derby, having skated with the All-Stars from 2016 through 2020, as well as the Brooklyn Bombshells. Daryl currently skates for Twin State Derby, is captain of their travel team, the Vixens, and is also the head of training. She is also the captain of Team Indigenous Rising, a borderless derby team made up of skaters of Indigenous heritage in North America.

Daryl now lives in Vermont with her husband and two rad cats. She enjoys having more access to outdoor space these days and her current goal is hiking all 48 4,000 footers of NH. She is a software engineer for her alma mater. Daryl also loves sewing, knitting and Survivor and is happy to talk about all at length!
