Rage City Junior Roller Derby
Rage City Junior Roller Derby is a co-ed league for skaters ages 7-17, with varying levels of skating experience—from true beginner to a seasoned derby kid.
Levels
Beginner (Age 7-17)
Beginner skaters will typically warm up with the whole group, then participate in drills along the outer track boundary. Once a skater becomes proficient at the basic skills and is determined to be safe on skates they will join the Level I group.
Basic Skating Skills: forward propelling and stopping, turning corners, building speed, backwards skating, stability
Level I (Age 7-17)
Level I skaters will typically warm up with the whole group, then participate in drills with their respective level group. Once a skater becomes proficient at the Level I skills and is determined to be safe on skates they will join the Level II group.
Intermediate Skating Skills: avoiding unexpected obstacles, hopping on skates, building speed and endurance, light contact including skate tapping and leaning into other skaters
Basic Derby Rules: skater positions, jam start, whistle education, positional blocking
Game Play: Positional Scrimmage, possible participation in in-league mashup demo games
Level II (Age 7-17)
Level II skaters will typically warm up with the whole group, then participate in drills with their respective level group. Once a skater becomes proficient at the Level II skills and is determined to be safe on skates they will join the Level III group.
Intermediate Skating Skills: jumping, skate endurance, derby position, knee taps
Intermediate Derby Rules: leaning blocking, lead jammer abilities, call-offs, defining the pack, out-of-play, derby penalties
Game Play: Leaning contact Scrimmage, Participation in in-league mashup demo games, possible inter-league play and inter-league mashups
Level III (Age 13-17)
Full-contact roller derby played with the same set of skills and held to the same minimum skills requirements as adult skaters.
Advanced Skating Skills: Full-speed blocking, apex jumps, advanced roller derby strategy
Advanced Game Play: Leaning contact Scrimmage, Participation in in-league mashup demo games, possible inter-league play and inter-league mashups
All contact drills are broken into age groups (7-12 and 13-17) then broken into groups according to skills.
Practices
Practice Schedule
Season 16 practices run weekly through October to April. New skater intakes occur monthly—please contact us for more info!
Requirements to Skate
Dues + Fees
Annual fee is $100 per season. In addition to track time and coaching, these dues cover the cost of skater jerseys and background checks for coaches and adult volunteers. The annual fee also grants opt-in voting rights to the parent to vote on behalf of their child, access to to membership portal, communication channels, and the league calendar.
Monthly dues are $40 per month. These dues include one on-skate practice session per week.
Mandatory Insurance
Rage City is a member of Junior Roller Derby Association and is required to abide by the JRDA insurance and waiver policies. The insurance fee is $40 per skater and is payable to the league via cash or check.
Gear
Each skater needs quad skates, a multi-impact helmet, knee pads, elbow pads, and wrist guards. We require each skater to have their own mouth guard. Skaters will not be permitted to participate in practice of any level without all protective gear including their mouthguard. A limited quantity of loaner gear is available with advance notice.
Uniform Fee
Included in the annual fee.
